The KURU Story
A Passion Forged
in Leather
KURU was born in the workshops of Addis Ababa, where leather has been worked for centuries. Our founders grew up watching master shoemakers — people who treated each hide as a canvas and each stitch as a brushstroke.
Frustrated by seeing this extraordinary craft remain invisible to the world, they set out to build a brand worthy of the artisans behind it. KURU was their answer: premium leather footwear that carries the soul of Ethiopia into every pair.
Today, every KURU shoe is still made by hand in our Addis Ababa workshop, by the same skilled artisans whose families have worked leather for generations. Nothing has changed — except that the world is finally watching.

The Process
How We Craft
Every KURU shoe goes through a meticulous process of handcraftsmanship that takes days to complete. Here is how we do it.

Leather Selection
Only the top 5% of Ethiopian highland hides pass our quality standards.

Pattern Cutting
Each pattern is hand-cut by our most experienced artisans to minimize waste.

Lasting & Forming
The leather is wetted and hand-lasted onto custom wooden lasts over 24 hours.

Welt Stitching
Our Goodyear welt is sewn by hand using waxed linen thread for lasting strength.

Sole Construction
Double leather soles are bonded and stitched in a Blake or Goodyear welt method.
06
Finishing & Burnishing
Each shoe is hand-burnished to create a deep, individual patina unique to that pair.

Milestones
2018
The Beginning
KURU was founded in Addis Ababa by a group of passionate artisans determined to showcase Ethiopian leather craftsmanship to the world.
2019
First Collection
We launched our debut collection of six styles, each named after iconic Ethiopian landmarks. The response was overwhelming.
2021
Going Global
KURU began shipping internationally, bringing Ethiopian heritage footwear to customers across Africa, Europe, and North America.
2023
Artisan Workshop
We opened our flagship workshop in Addis Ababa, employing over 50 master artisans and investing in traditional leatherworking techniques.
2025
10,000 Pairs
We celebrated the milestone of 10,000 handcrafted pairs sold — a testament to the love for Ethiopian craftsmanship worldwide.

KURU's commitment to sustainability goes beyond using natural materials. We partner with tanneries that use vegetable-based tanning agents, ensuring our leather is free from harmful chemicals.
Our packaging is 100% recycled and recyclable. We encourage shoe resoling and offer a lifetime repair service, reducing waste and extending the life of every pair we make.
We are proud to operate a carbon-neutral workshop, powered by solar energy and supported by reforestation programs in the Ethiopian highlands.
